A lot of lawyers tell me that they want to post on LinkedIn but they’re not sure what to share. They also don’t want to share a lot of personal information either.

Here are some simple ideas of what you can share on LinkedIn that is focused on your work:

✅Client successes (with their permission)
✅Commenting on issues and trends in your practice area and sectors
✅Interesting articles adding your opinion
✅News about your law firm  e.g. new joiners, awards, legal directory rankings
✅Personal news – e.g. new qualifications/promotion/client testimonials
✅Charity/Association involvement
✅Local community engagement

Sharing things about your personal life can help build rapport with others and let other people identify with you. If you feel comfortable sharing areas of your life on LinkedIn, then I think it’s important to set some boundaries. A good rule of thumb is if you post something on social media and then a stranger asks you about it in person, are you going to feel comfortable or will you be taken aback? For example, you post about your daughter’s first day of school and a stranger says, “How was little Eileen’s first day at Belfast primary.”

There isn’t a strict rule on what you post as long as it reflects you and what you want to say to the world. For example, I have been sharing personal posts about my tea journey  and the side project I have to my main business.

One final tip. Consistency is key to LinkedIn success so it can be helpful to set a manageable target and routine. For example, one post a week on a Tuesday morning.
